The Importance Of Raw Materials Inventory Management In Supply Chains

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Vendors, Distributors, Customers, Online Deliveries…

Manufacturing goods and making them reach the end customer is not as easy as it looks. In today’s times, it requires a constant and everchanging network of stakeholders that need to function and perform at the highest levels.

Sourcing raw materials, procuring infrastructure, streamlining factory production, packaging and transportation are all heavily intertwined and interdependent.

While there have been a lot of studies and papers on the various processes, one area that has not received significant attention is- raw materials management

In this article, we are going to look at the importance of raw material inventory management in supply chains.

Raw Materials: Meaning and Definition

In very simple words, raw materials refer to substances or products in their unprocessed form. These substances are considered as ingredients and play a direct role in the production of the final product. For example, for a tire, rubber is the primary raw material.

Raw materials are considered commodities and are sold at various markets all over the world. Food products, vegetation, animals, chemicals, and other substances are frequently used as raw materials for end product creation.

Raw materials are further subdivided into two major categories-

  1. Direct Raw Materials- these substances and ingredients play a major role in the ultimate product manufacture. For example, for a clothing company, cotton can be a raw material.
  2. Indirect Raw Materials- these are ingredients that play a secondary or tertiary role in the production process. Taking the same above example, for a clothing company, chains for trousers’ zips can be an indirect raw material.

Raw Materials Inventory Management: The Major Benefits

In this section, we will look at some of the major advantages and benefits of raw materials management.

How Technology is playing a major role in Raw Materials Management

Technology has been aiding materials management and improving business outputs. In recent years, a lot of emphases has been put on the integration of advanced technologies in the field of materials management.

The inventory optimization software that integrates with ERP systems is helping provide businesses with real-time data. This, in turn, helps in forecasting present and future raw material needs and production timings.

A lot of focus on the use of technology in materials management rests with data analytics. Data can help in showing the usage of raw materials and align it with product demands and production processes. This means that the data will show you your customer demands for the last three months and prepare a model for this month as well.

As a business, you will read the data and order your raw materials accordingly. This ensures that raw materials are not occupying your warehouse space unnecessarily.

The Bottom Line

A manufacturing or production business, whether in the B2B or B2C category is always looking for ways to optimize. Many people miss this elementary, yet important stage of production (materials management) and try to go on to the fourth or fifth steps.

The key is to start the optimization process from the stage of raw materials management. This is such an important and critical stage that it can help in transforming the fortunes of any manufacturing business within a few months.
